Understanding CMS Data
These figures are based on coronary angioplasty and stenting procedures billed to Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage as reported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in their August 2026 data release. The CMS data doesn't include procedures performed for patients who have other health care coverage (e.g., commercially insured, self pay, or VA). Furthermore, CMS sums up specific billing codes covering balloon angioplasty, stent placement, plaque removal, and related catheter treatments of the arteries of the heart to calculate this total. The category is named for the group of procedures it covers, not for what each one involved: a procedure counts whether or not a stent was placed. Billing variation and coding errors could potentially affect CMS's data. Therefore, the coronary angioplasty and stenting volume data reported by CMS may be higher or lower than the actual total coronary angioplasty and stenting procedures performed by a clinician.
